ABOUT THE EVENT

The BALI INTERNATIONAL MARATHON being organized in cooperation with Indonesia's Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Bali Provincial Government, Bali Tourism Board, Indonesian Athletic Association, KONI and Bali Sports Committee.

In essence, the event is an off-shoot program of the annual Nitto Bali Marathon held from 1994 to 2002 wherein runners from all walks of life have joined and spicing it as the biggest international marathon event in the region. However, the Nitto Bali Marathon was put to shelve when crisis hit Bali

The people of Bali saw to it that more than the effect of the crisis with their lives, they painstakingly initiated, redeveloped and nurtured the renaissance of sports tourism in the Province. The Balinese people's desire to bring back the lost icon of their beloved Province put together all their efforts to reclaim the titular title of “The Island Paradise of the Orient” focusing on the potential of sports tourism that resulted in the upsurge of tourist visitors to over 4,000,000 last year and still growing to date.

This year's marathon event is scheduled on 18 October 2009, Sunday, 6:00 A.M. at Nusa Dua, Bali , Indonesia and offers Half Marathon (21.0975KM), 10K and 5K with several categories. The Organizing Committee has planned it to become an annual marathon event with the aim of offering full 42KM Marathon by next year and reverting to its original schedule of every 3 rd Sunday of October for its succeeding stages starting 2009. The Organizers have also applied for recognition with the Association of International Marathons (AIMS) with the view of becoming a distinguished annual marathon event at par with other international marathon events in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The event is named officially as 2nd GARUDA INDONESIA BALI INTERNATIONAL MARATHON in honor of GARUDA INDONESIA as its Official Event Presentor.
